PAS - Speed Modding Challenge!

Experienced modders who have worked on the ERTL Pump Action Shotgun (PAS) will know how easy it is to convert it from firing its original foam ball ammo to firing customized foam dart ammo... and most have experienced the nice 90-100ft ranges that can be easily achieved even with just the stock spring and plunger seal (especially when matched with the right foam dart and barrel setup).

But exactly how fast can it be done?

This "speed modding challenge" came about a while back when one of my colleagues got his brand new PAS in the mail, then he proceeded to open the box and mod his unit on the spot, so we quickly took the opportunity to time the entire conversion process. As the conversion mod is easily reversible, it eventually became a sort of fun competition amongst the guys to see who can mod faster!

Most new modders wonder how a PAS can be modded quickly and easily, so i created a demo video to show how its done.

Here is how to transform a 15ft range foam ball blaster into a 90-100ft range foam dart blaster... in just 3 minutes! :)

Yeah, it kinda makes modding most other blasters look way too time consuming and tedious in comparison (to achieve similar ranges). :)

  1. soloz1,

Haha... honestly, with all my e-tape fumbling and wrestling stuck casing screws, i'm sure you'll be able to beat my timing easily. :)

  2. How do you make your darts? Me and quite a few others want to know, because I'm pretty sure that's your secret to awesome ranges.

Yes, properly calibrated foam darts are the key to achieving optimal ranges and accuracy.

There are 2 main factors to look at when calibrating foam darts: Dart seal (with the barrel) and Tip weight.

You need to use foam that is high quality and which fits the barrel perfectly (and i'm referring to fully air-tight barrel systems), this enables all the compressed air from the plunger or air tank to propel the foam dart efficiently all the way through the barrel.

You'll have to try out different foam brands and barrel materials to find the best fit for your application.

The tip weight needs to be balanced to match the specific power of each blaster its used in. In general, lighter tips for lower powered blasters, heavier tips for higher powered blasters.

I customize different tip weights for the different blasters that i use in Nerf games.

There are many ways to calibrate your foam darts, here are some techniques which i've posted up which you can try out:

  4. ok guys I want to do this mod but I use stock darts would It still work. Which do you think would work the best cpvc or pvc piping
    thanks.

  5. Kids' Kitchen,

Stock streamline foam dart can be used too, but they aren't as accurate or consistent in performance.

You could probably try 1/2" SCH80 PVC/CPVC pipes as the barrel, though they would probably need further modding to fit properly (depending on the specific pipe brand's specifications).

  6. Could you just hot glue the pipe on?

  7. 40mNerf,

Sure, the barrel can also be glued on too... but most modders prefer to allow it to be removable, so that the setup is modular and the barrels can be swapped easily.

  8. Also, what type of pipe did you use and where did you buy it?

  9. 40mNerf,

As mentioned in the pop-up annotations within the demo video, i used a Europet brand PETG pipe in my modding example. I got it from aquarium shops.

You can also use any other suitable pipe or tube material, just match it to your foam darts and blaster.

  10. Last thing, at which store chain could I buy K20+ springs to use for modding?

  11. 40mNerf,

Just check at the large hardware stores (they usually stock a selection of various springs) or with industrial spring manufacturing companies.

  12. does it really shoot 90ft+ just from these mods?

    ReplyDelete
  13. martin,

Yes, with the right foam darts and barrel fit combination, it can hit 90-100ft easily with just this simple mod. That performance result is mainly due to its large spring plunger volume.

This has been well documented and known amongst experienced modders for many years. :)

  14. What is the name of the tubing u put in the front? Is there a code name for it? Cuz I want to find one. What is the size of it? Eg diameter

  15. demolution,

Its labelled as Europet (approx. 16mm OD) and can be found at aquarium shops in Singapore... the stock availability seems quite sporadic though, so you'll have to shop around to find them.

  16. My question is, where the heck do you get it?

I got my PAS blaster units from Amazon.com.

  17. Is that all? just take out the barrel and put in the pipe?
Also, how many screws did you take out? it was too fast for me to count them...

    1. Anonymous,

Yup... the design already allows for a simple barrel change to use foam darts. Just remove 14 casing screws to do the mod.

Btw, its also possible to just remove the screws at the front part of the blaster, then pry it apart abit and detach the original orange barrel, it'll be even faster. :)

  18. hey can it be used with a hopper clip and wye? with that mod, can i use stock darts? or only stefans

    1. N-Strike 3 team,

Yes, a hopper clip system can be used with modified PAS too.

Normal length foam darts are too long to be used in hopper clips, they will get stuck in the wye section... you have to use short length stefans with hopper clips.

I used to order them in from Amazon.com, but that was back in 2011... they seem to be sold out and are no longer available there anymore, you'll have to check around at other online sites to find them.

  21. Hi do you know any blaster similar to PAS ? That shoots as strong as the PAS after modding ? Maybe not from the nerf line..
    Thank you

You can try the Lanard Tripleshot, it also uses a pump action grip for priming too... though its direct plunger is abit smaller, so modded performance may be slightly lower.

  22. Hi again, do you know anywhere else i can find Lanard Tripleshot other than amazon ? Maybe stores in sg ?

They are not available at local stores, so you'll have to order them in from Amazon, or you can try checking eBay to find sellers too.
