  1. Oh my goodness, it's like an airsoft gearbox! This is really an interesting gun and a cool step for Nerf--fixing problems with this would be terrible though, I can image dart jams could cause misfeeds/misfires and then the first problem would be a broken piston, and then what do you do?

    1. there is a jam door, and in my year of using my stampede, it has never jammed.

  2. It looks like a direct plunger system. am i correct?

    ReplyDelete
  3. what spring could i add in to make it stronger?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Michael,

Yup, its a motorised direct plunger system.

    ReplyDelete
  5. weaponhazard,

Well, the stock motor is designed to prime the original stock spring, but if you were to switch to a stronger spring instead, you'll also need to install a higher torque motor to handle the extra load.

Both of these modding processes are linked.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not to mention, if a stronger spring was used, one would have to strengthen the gear teeth as well. If left alone, the would start to chip and slip during firing.

    ReplyDelete
  7. any air restrictors or possible mods?

    ReplyDelete
  8. do you know how much it will cost?

    ReplyDelete
  9. William,

Yup, possible mods for this blaster include AR removal, spring replacement, higher voltage, higher torque motor, reinforced gears, brass breech conversion etc. Lots of possibilities. :)

  10. noah,

For the blaster package and retail pricing in Singapore, please refer to the official press release from Hasbro Singapore that i posted up earlier:

  11. do my eyes deceive me, or is there no bold sled?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Moonsword,

Yup, it does not use a bolt sled.

It uses a motorised gear system for the priming and firing process instead.

  13. would this gun shoot as well as a longshot (cuz if it is i'm giving up on my longshot hunt)

    ReplyDelete
  14. playstationwiisixty,

Well, in stock version, the Stampede has similiar performance as a Vulcan. Perhaps slightly less range than a stock Longshot, but its just a difference of a few feet anyways.

The Longshot and Stampede have very different internals designs, and those internals tend to make a difference in the general modding direction of each blaster.

So the question you have to ask yourself is if you want a blaster that has the potential to be modded to have a longer range, but is single-shot? ie. Longshot.

Or you want a blaster that can be modded to have higher rate-of-fire (RoF), but with lesser range? ie. Stampede.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It has occoured to me that you cannot place too strong of a spring because it uses gears to cock and fire

    ReplyDelete
  16. but if you remove the AR and spring replacement etc. wouldn't it shoot similar to a longshot because it has a direct plunger system

    ReplyDelete
  17. i already have an idea for a 9/16 brass breech.
1 thing, does it seem like recon/raider breech or a longshot breech. anyways it seems like it has way more modding potential than the vulcan.

    ReplyDelete
  18. playstationwiisixty,

I've just uploaded a photo of the plunger comparison between the Stampede and Longshot.

As you can see, the Stampede's plunger has a smaller volume compared to the Longshot's plunger, therefore even with equivalent mods, power increases would naturally not be the same.

There are also the added factors of stronger springs vs electric motor power, additional voltage requirements, durability of the gear system etc... so there will be much more things to consider when modding a Stampede.

    ReplyDelete
  19. William,

It's overall dimensions are more similiar to a Longshot (being a larger blaster with a direct plunger), but new measurements will definitely need to be made to properly custom build brass breeches for the Stampede.

    ReplyDelete
  20. rc batteries make faster than vulcan fire

  21. VersatileChicken,

I posted up some approximate measurements of the Stampede and Longshot plunger tubes for comparison over at NerfHaven forum, check it out:

  24. how far does the stampede shoot with just AR removal
p.s. would it outrange reverse plunger guns like the recon and stuff that only have AR removal

    ReplyDelete
  25. playstationwiisixty,

I'm in the midst of modding and testing my Stampede sets, and will be posting up a proper mod guide soon.

From my initial testing with just the AR removal, i've noticed the overall range improving another 10-15ft... but as expected, the sound of the plunger impacts now become much louder too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. it might be possible to modifie it with a bolt, so it could be fired without a batteries. depending on how the gears are set up.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow.... nerf has really outdone themselves. The vulcan was nice and all, but it had its share of problems. This, however, seems like a vulcan with all its problems fixed. Although, it still requires 6X d-size batteries, and it looks really heavy (could you maybe post weight in pounds? thanks in advance.) But if it come with THREE 18 dart clips, one 6 dart clip, a (somewhat useless, but cool looking nevertheless) tactical rail shield, AND 60 darts, i might just get this for all the stuff that comes with it. But i think i'll wait till the price goes down (its 50 bucks to preorder it from walmart).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bob,

As mentioned in my previous comments in the Stampede review, when loaded with a 18-dart clip, foregrip bipod and 6 x D Batteries, the Stampede weighs around 2+ kg... or approx 4.4+ lbs.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Found them on sale in walmart in ohio today. $50

    ReplyDelete
  30. How frequently does it jam? Maybe a jams per shots ratio. And would it be hard to remove the air restrictors?

    ReplyDelete
  31. j,

So far, i've found the Nerf Stampede to be relatively jam-free.

Firing it in stock condition with streamline darts for the past week, i've not even encountered a jam yet.

I guess it all depends on operating it properly and making sure the foam darts used are not bent or damaged. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Just got one from walmart yesterday. Aswell as an Alpha Trooper from target. Can wait to get to work on the Stampede. Any reccomendations for a front mount. I was thinkin of using maybe a shotgun or a raider. Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  33. does the stampede shoot just as far as the nerf vulcan on stock range?

cause i can't decide which one to get.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jordan,

From my experience, the Stampede and Vulcan both have similar stock range.

The choice between the two models will depend on whether you want a portable clip-fed blaster or a more emplacement-style belt-fed blaster. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. First just want to say that i am happy to find this site.
As far a a stampede vs the Vulcan i have to agree with bob. i have had 2 vulcans for 5 mounths and it dose have some issues. lots of misfires and plenty of jams. I have been using the stampede for just a little over a week and find nerf has made vast improvments with there auto fires. but as for a picking one over the other (if you have to) i would chose the stamped for action and fighting over a heavyer vulcan and the vulcan for scewing around at work (or if you are like me paint it and use it as a conversation piece). i can not count the number of non-nerf loving friends i have shot with it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi, I'm planning to buy a Stampede as well. I was wondering from where do you usually purchase your stampedes? I'm SG. :)

    ReplyDelete

  38. what is the overall weight of the nerf vulcan and stampede i need a gun thats portable and auto fires.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Would like to ask -- anyone knows the current draw or power consumption of the motor? Trying to find an alternative to D-cell batteries, but it doesn't make sense to get a small 9V (or higher) battery pack only to run it dry after a few shots.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jordan,

The Stampede with 6 x D batteries, 18-dart clip, blast shield and pop-out bipod weighs around 2+ kg.

A Vulcan is around 3+ kg with a similar load out.

    ReplyDelete
  42. zayndion,

I have no idea what mods you have done on your Stampede so i can't really help you in that aspect.

Perhaps your batteries are simply low on power? Just change them to a new good quality set and try again.

    ReplyDelete
  43. hi i followed ur mod giude and thats all the mods i did to the gun and i did try new batttries and it still didnt work

    ReplyDelete
  44. zayndion,

Did you replace the original spring with a 9kg or stronger aftermarket spring?

Did it work properly after you modded it, then suddenly didn't work?

What battery type and voltage are you using?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Doesnt the spring weaken because when not in use the action is always open thus the spring is compressed?

    ReplyDelete
  46. USNerf,

The Stampede's spring plunger layout is different from other current Nerf blasters.

At rest, the plunger and bolt is by default in the open position and the spring is not compressed.

When the trigger is pulled, the motor activates and pushes forward the plunger and bolt to chamber a foam dart, at the same time the plunger catch holds back the plunger rod. This is the action that compresses the spring.

When the bolt is at its most forward position, a mechanism releases the plunger catch and the plunger rod is then propelled forward by the spring, thereby firing a shot.

After that, the black return spring pushes the plunger and bolt back to the open position, then the process starts again.

    ReplyDelete
  47. What could be possible for minimization? What if you use a smaller external battery pack rather than the huge battery sled?
Also, how's the brass breech going?

    ReplyDelete
  48. thejerm,

If you look at the internals of the Stampede, you'll notice that all the space in front of dart blocker paddle can be removed, thereby shortening the entire blaster length by almost 30%.

In addition, if smaller batteries are used (ie. 14500 size Li-Ion rechargeable batteries like in my Stampede Mod Guide) then all the empty space at the battery sled section can be removed too, and those smaller batteries can be repositioned in other places like the trigger handle.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Ad Man

Depends what you would use it for. If its just something to muck around with, you probs want a nite finder. Mavericks are good but Ive used the recon, maverick and nite finder and i have to say, the recon is probs the best. So i recommend just saving up for the stampede cos its sick.

  55. Hey I bought one of these and I didn't buy batteries. How can I shoot the gun without batteries?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ethan,

You cannot fire it without batteries. Get some batteries.

In the future, please read the product descriptions on the box clearly before purchasing them.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Do the more powerful batteries just increase the rate of fire? If so the only way to make it more powerful is to replace the motor, spring and a couple of other parts to increase its range (if the air restrictors are already out). Is that right?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Greg,

  59. Heey, i removed the air restrictor and it looks exactly like your picture but my gun will not shoot the dart forward instead it shoots backwards. Have i done anything wrong? Or do i need to complete the rest of the mods?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Damien,

I'm not sure what you mean by "will not shoot the dart forward instead it shoots backwards"... how can a blaster shoot backwards? Can you elaborate? 'cos i never encountered that before.

  61. If I use battery converters and use 2500 mh rechargeable batteries, will that help in anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  62. wafi,

  68. assult-marine,

Since you are not clear about the specific problem in your Stampede, i can't really help much anyways.

Just exchange it at the store for a new working unit, much easier. Save all the hassle. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. hey sg i got one question though, that system is baicly like the longshot only full auto right? then that would mean you basicly can turn a longshot into a stampede just by adding a simple motor to make the cocking mechanism back?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Luis,

Well, the Stampede's firing system actually operates very differently from the Longshot's firing system.

In the Longshot system, the bolt starts in the closed position. Users pull back the changing handle to move the bolt backwards, which in turn pushes back the plunger rod and compresses the spring, then it catches and holds the spring compressed. The bolt is manually moved back forward to chamber a foam dart, then the trigger is pulled to release the catch and fire the shot.

In the Stampede system, the bolt starts in the open position. When the trigger is pulled, the motor pushes the bolt forward but the plunger rod will still remain held back with a catch, this movement actually compresses the spring in the process until the bolt is fully forward and chambered a foam dart, then a control stalk releases the catch and the plunger rod propels forward to fire the shot.

Although both the Stampede and Longshot use similar plunger designs, they have opposite methods of operation.

Perhaps you could try getting a Stampede and check it out in more detail, it uses a very interesting automated spring plunger mechanism. :)

    ReplyDelete

im trying to desing a mechanism to make that on the longshot with just modying the sled and with some electronics, for more ppl to do and enjoy their longshots even better :P

    ReplyDelete
  73. Luis,

I know what you mean... though i guess it's still easier to just buy a Stampede, they get similar improved performance and ranges after being modded too. :)

  76. I've been visiting this site for quite a while now and I've read up a lot of mods for this particular gun. Not once has anyone mentioned anything about swapping out the stock motor for an upgrade with better torque with the use of higher tensioned springs. I'm hoping you know of a better motor to replace the stock motor on the stampede.

    ReplyDelete
  77. CarbonVanilla,

You can check out this discussion thread at the NerfSG forum about replacement Stampede motors:

  78. SG Nerf,

Thanks for the link to the forum, although I spent over 2 hours sifting through many topics, I haven't found anything that pertains to the stampede motor yet. I may very well have to use a high-end r/c car motor of the same metal casing type to achieve more torque and speed.

I just brought my first stampede, the thing has never been fired and I'm already modding it. lol

    Again, thanks for the link!

    1. A Fruit,

Check that the batteries are connected properly and check that the various safety pressure switches (the on/off switch, the jam access hatch, clip well etc) are working properly, they have to be activated so that the circuit can be closed and live.

If you checked everything and it still doesn't work, then it could be a faulty unit. I guess you could get it exchanged at the store for a new working unit.

      Delete
  80. I made another rookie error. I was removing the safety switches from the circuit (the three magazine switches and the jam door switch) and I accidentally damaged the small spring on the door that closes inside the barrel. I can close the door with my finger and the gun will fire one shot, but if I leave the door open, the dart will only move two inches out of the magazine and get stuck in the barrel.

What purpose exactly does this small door serve - it looks like some kind of air seal. I notice your brass breech mod doesn't have this kind of setup and uses the dart as a seal instead.

Anyway, what are my options for rectifying this mistake?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bad_Bud,

The small paddle door is the most important part of a Stampede that uses the stock breech system.

You can see similar parts in all clip-fed bolt system blasters (like Longshots, Recons, Raiders etc), they are usually called "pop-up dart tooths" in those blasters.

That door is designed to close during the chambering process when the bolt moves forward, it serves to block the foam dart and force it backwards into the moving bolt tube, thereby chambering it into the bolt to create the dart seal for firing.

In such breech systems the bolt tube itself is the actual barrel itself (everything after the bolt is just faux barrel, simply for show, not required at all). There is no bolt to barrel seal, so once the foam dart is fired and leaves the bolt tube, it starts losing power and speed within the faux barrel.

Without the paddle door, the foam darts will just be pushed loosely into the faux barrel and the air from the bolt will not propel them 'cos they are not even chambered with any seal at all.

Its like putting a foam dart just outside the barrel of a Nerf blaster (ie. Nite Finder), the air will just puff out and not even propel the foam dart.

To fix the paddle door, you'll need to attach or glue back its spring. If that's not possible then you'll need to get a replacement from another Stampede.

Btw, in a brass breech system, this door is not required anymore because the breech system is converted to a proper breech to barrel seal design (the bolt pushes the foam dart into the barrel and maintains the seal during firing), so the brass barrel becomes the actual barrel.

      Delete
    2. is it possible to fix the paddle door without geting a replacement from another stampede?

      Delete
    3. sherman,

If its broken, just use high strength 2-part epoxy glue to fix it, then make sure to test that it can flip open and close properly (and sync with the firing cycles).

      Delete
    4. err well the paddle door is gone =\ not possible to glue it back

      Delete
    5. sherman,

Oic... in that case, i guess you'll just have to get a new Stampede, and probably use your current one for spare parts.

Alternatively, you could do the sealed brass breech mod on it, as that modded design wouldn't require the paddle door mechanism anymore:

      http://modworks.blogspot.com/2012/01/nerf-stampede-brass-breech-mod-guide.html

Or just sell it to someone who is already planning to do that particular mod. :)

    Replies
    1. Max78454,

Most likely during the modding process you re-installed the plunger catch plate facing the wrong direction, so although the plunger is moving, the plunger rod is not catching, hence it is not being primed at all.

The solid side of the plunger catch plate should be facing the plunger (not the other way around).

Open the blaster up to check and re-adjust the plunger catch plate back to the correct facing, that will solve the issue.

      Delete
  82. Hey SG Nerf,

My friend has a problem with the stampede. He says that when the trigger is pulled, the stampede's plunger moves back and forth normally but the dart does not fire, or even leave the clip. The batteries are fresh. Can you help?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

If the Stampede is modded, the catch plate solid side must be facing the plunger (not the other way around, a very common mistake by modders) or else the plunger cannot catch and will not be primed at all (hence the bolt moving to and fro but not firing anything).

If it's still a stock blaster, then something inside might have been mis-aligned or broken, you'll have to open up the casing and check.

      Delete
  83. With enough modding, would it be possible to move and re-wire the handle and trigger in front of the clip to make it bull-pup?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. SMOGo,

Yes, its possible to move the trigger anywhere on the blaster 'cos there is no need for a mechanical connection with it and the catch, the Stampede's trigger simply activates a pressure switch to on and off the circuit. :)

      Delete
  84. Milez,

Okay, that part is the catch release bar, its required to release the catch to fire it. If that bar is damaged and cannot move smoothly to and fro to push up the catch, then your blaster will not be able to function properly.

I guess you'll just have to work out a way to restore it back to its original working condition... maybe glue back the cut parts or something.

  86. hey sgnerf, i have a problem with my stampede. it is smg'd. the problem is that the plunger tube doesn't move forward enough,so the catch doesn't trigger. (i already kind-of know how its internals work from tinkering with it.) i tried attatching something to that peg on the buttom of the plunger to make it touch the catch thing, but it won't work. i think it's cause' the gears (the ones that move the plunger) are off. i can't find the right placement.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Iron Archer,

It could be due to the gear teeth somehow slipping or perhaps even the gear connections slipping, so the plunger does not get moved forward properly.

Here is a troubleshooting thread at NerfHaven forum that could explain one of the causes and provide a solution:

  89. Does anybody know how to wire a stampede with 9 volt batteries?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

You can get those 9V connectors with +/- wires, then join the wires to the respective contacts on the blaster

Note that 9V batteries are designed for low drain devices so their mAh capacity is very low, hence they will run out of power very quickly. It'll tend to get expensive as youll need to constantly buy new ones after just a brief amount of usage.

  90. Hi There. I have rewired the stampede for use with lipos. Before I used trustfires that worked allright but I prefer the power output of lipos especially with the stronger blasterparts spring. With the rewire I threw out all the locks and stuff except for the barrel door. Now my problem is that the darts just collect in the barrel and simply fall out when i lower it. What could have gone wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Sorry, me again... maybe I found part of the problem with my darts falling instead of shooting out. Could be I removed to many parts around the dart-"door"-part of the barrel that are used to control it during firing. Unaware I already threw all removed parts in the bits bin and now I don't know which parts to put back on amongst all those excess parts in ther.
