Nerf Stampede "SMG" Conversion!

Minimized Stampede... my "SMG" version! :)

Gaps covered by assorted bits and pieces from chopped out parts (guess which parts the bits came from?).

Retained shoulder stock.

Relocated battery pack. It houses 4 x fully charged 14500-size TrustFire Li-Ion rechargeable batteries (unprotected versions) which output a total of 16.8V.

And this is what i call... the "SpamFire" Combo! :)

Check it out in action!

  1. can you do a write up on this?

  2. Now that is definitely nice! Very good and clean work. How's the accuracy though? I'm assuming it'll be good for cqb type of games as the darts might go wild with the short barrel. Correct me if I'm wrong though

    1. Actually, longer barrels decrease accuracy and range by knocking the darts around inside it.

  3. That is so awesome. I want to get one and do that to it now.

  4. Chris,

Well, i'm not planning any write-up for this conversion 'cos its basically just chopping off various sections and gluing on bits from the excess plastic. I guess you can trace the cut lines from the photos quite easily. :)

  5. surkrew,

In my case, i use customized foam darts which were accurate in the beginning so for my unit the accuracy was still the same with or without the front barrel.

Users who still use stock Nerf streamlines darts will most probably see a drop in accuracy though.

  6. This looks AWESOME Sg! I am constantly impressed by your creativity!

Have you thought about relocating the battery pack inside the stock? I'm assuming you kept the batteries where they were so you can easily switch them out for fresh ones.

    ReplyDelete
  7. KiyoshiAphelion ,

Yes, its possible to relocate the battery pack into the back part of the shoulder stock too, the space there is abit limited though so it'll require some re-configuration of the battery positioning and the wiring will need to re-route through the catch and plunger section.

You're right, i decided to position the battery pack nearer the middle of the casing so that it'll be easier to access quickly... and it also helps to keep the weight balance centered too. :)

  8. :O
That is quite awesome. I'd do that to my Stampede if I had another one...and a 4xAA battery pack.
This looks really clean, well done!

  9. question.. i know it may sound odd.. did you remove the internal before you chop the bits?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Onse,

Yes, for the shell sections that are being cut, i removed and seperated all the internal components in those areas to prevent any accidental damage to them during the cutting process.

  11. thanks for the info.. just finish mine not as clean cut as yours. i used foam padding at the front end same goes for the empty battery cover at the back. thanks again for the tips

  12. I have also finished mine. My goals are a little bit different l, though. I have installed some screws in the front of the minimized gun so I can always install the removed front part as a sort of "removable barrel extension". This way I can transport the minimized stampede to our office in a small bag.

  13. Could you ditch the integrated shoulder stock and make an attachment for the raider shoulder stock?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Red Utah,

Well, you could remove part of the back section, but a portion of it actually houses the plunger and catch system, so there is a limit to how much of the rear shoulder stock that can be removed.

Check out its internal layout at my Stampede Internals Guide:

  15. Is the stock still relatively sturdy?

    Yes, its still quite sturdy.

  17. SGNerf,
I did a mod similar to this based on your designs. I hope that you enjoy this visual qupte of your work. It's listed on my blog of guns that I have for ebay sales.

I'd love to hear what you think.

  18. lasagna678,

    Looks great!

I like your method of adding a Longshot shoulder stock clip holder to the Stampede, as well as the addition of extra tactical rails.

Lots of other interesting mods and repaints you have there too. :)

  19. Fantastic mod. Do the bipod and sheild still fit on in their intended places? Also, were there any particularly difficult parts to this minimization that we should know about/ be aware of?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Will,

Yes, the shield and bipod can still be mounted on the tactical rails that are remaining after minimization.

I guess the main thing to focus on when doing such blaster minimization mods is to cut the parts as steadily and accurately as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What do you use to cut the plastic parts? It seems so clean.....

    1. Bednesti,

The ranges are slightly better due to the shorter faux barrel, around 5-10% improvement over existing modded ranges.

  23. Sorry to Necro this old thread. I am a long time fan of all your work - trolling for years and learning, but never posted. Nerfhaven, here, etc.

I use the Trustfires in configuration with dummies in the Rayven per your advice - and want to do a couple of these Stampede SMGs.

If you don't mind my asking; what kind of battery box did you use for this mod? (or more specifically, where can you obtain a small AA battery box like that one?)

    Many thanks in advance!

    1. Anonymous,

The battery box i used is a 4AA battery holder with a flat layout that has a removable cover and on/off switch, i got it from the electronics parts supply shops at Sim Lim Tower in Singapore.

If you are overseas, you could also order them from sites like DealExtreme, here is the link to a similar item:

  24. Do you know if a 9v battery would work as a suitable power source as I want to make the stampede but am not too fussed about as 18 volts would quite excessive.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. andyb123,

Alkaline 9V batteries could be used, but they have low discharge rate so performance will be sub-optimal and very low mAh capacity, hence will run out of power very quickly (they are designed for low power devices).

Its still much more cost effective to use higher capacity rechargeable battery sources.

      Delete
    2. Thanks
But I think I'll just have a mess about with different power sources to find something ideal

    3. Back again
I have found a 6 AA battery holder that would fit nicely but when I use it nothing happens.
Is it because AA's don't have a high enough discharge rate or do I simply need some new batteries

      Delete
    4. andyb123,

Well, if you are still using the stock spring, then Alkaline AA batteries should still be able to power the motor to pull the spring (but not with heavier spring loads though).

If you find that it can't work, then most likely the Alkaline AA batteries you are using are either too weak or the battery/holder connections are not secure. You'll have to check the connections to ensure the current is flowing through the circuit properly (best to use a multimeter to check).

      Delete
    5. Turned out it was just that the batteries were too weak. Just got some new ones and they work a treat. Time to get out the tools to try this myself

    6. Very almost finished on this topic, how long did you cut the fake barrel. After that has been cut all I need to do is sand the cut edges and fix the batteries on and im done!

      Delete
    7. andyb123,

With a small handsaw and a dremel, it took me around an hour to cut and sand the casing sections, also took some time to shape various parts to cover the gaps too.

      Delete
    8. I meant the length of the barrel but oh well. I've just finished the whole thing and it works pretty well, it's not exactly the same as I left the very bottom rail on but it still looks epic.

    9. andyb123,

Oic... i just matched it to the minimized casing and cut accordingly.

  25. Hi, how long do the trust fire batteries last before needing a recharge.
    Thanks!

    1. Anonymous,

From my experience, with modded 9kg load spring setup, the set of 14500-size unprotected TrustFire Li-Ion rechargeable batteries that i use can last around 40+ x 18-dart clips (approx. 700+ shots) before the voltage drops and the rate-of-fire slows down noticeably, then it needs to be recharged.

  26. Thanks, great site by the way.

    1. Hello SG Nerf, im using 6 AA battery's, how many shots do you think I could get off before the RoF slows?

      Delete
    2. Anonymous,

Depends on the quality and mAh capacity of the AA batteries you are using... it'll probably last around 40-50 clips worth of 18-dart clips (just a guess).

  27. I want to minimize my stampede... but i don't have a dremel. what should i use?

Maybe you could also try using a handsaw to minimize the casing too.

  28. how long is the Stampede now? just wondering whether i can put this in my bag after chopping it up (right now its twice the length of my bag).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

With my minimization mod done, it is now around 55cm in length.

It can actually be minimized a further 10-15cm shorter (reduce the front more and remove the entire shoulder stock section), but i preferred to retain those sections to balance the design. :)

      Delete
    2. thanks for the help! my bag, however, is only 40-45cm in length, so i don't think i'll be able to fit it. But i think that i have another bag lying around, i'll use that.

  29. I've just found out that if i fully minimize my Stampede, it will become a pistol. Am i correct?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

Well, its possible to minimize the front section close to the dart blocker paddle mechanism (if you are still using the stock breech system) and also minimize the shoulder stock area until the plunger and catch section.

It'll be very compact, but there will still be a section of the casing jutting out from the back as that is required to house the plunger and catch section.

Not what i'd term as a "pistol"... but it gets quite close. :)

    2. Would it be light enough to hold with one hand? It would be awesome to dual wield these!

      Delete
    3. Anonymous,

Well, my Stampede SMG unit weighs only around 1.0-1.1kg and i use it one-handed quite often in games, so i guess an even more minimized version should be usable too. :)

  30. I saw an internal picture of the Stampede, and it looks like the front orange part can be removed without cutting it. Could you tell me whether this is true or not. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

The front orange sections could be detached just by removing their screws, but note that part of those sections also serve a purpose to either secure the faux barrel alignment or to mount the synchronized dart blocker paddle mechanism (which is required for the firing system to work)... so in order to preserve those components, the non-required orange areas will usually have to be cut or trimmed (instead of just removing the entire orange section).

    2. Okay thanks!
Is it better to open the blaster up then cut the parts or can i just cut it from the outside?

      P.S. Nice site, very informative!

      Delete
    3. Anonymous,

I'd recommend opening up the casing and cutting the parts and sections individually... you can see exactly which parts are being cut and its usually much neater. :)

Its basically the same as a normal Stampede, just without the front section and rear battery compartment.

  32. Hi SG,

How did you attach your battery compartment to your shell? I assume you only attached it to one half of the blaster so you can still get it open easily. Was it just epoxy?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. T da B,

For my unit, i just attached it on with a few tiny counter-sunk machine screws on one side of the blaster casing (there were already some screw port holes in the 4AA battery case).

I guess you could also just epoxy glue it on too. :)

  33. Hi SG Nerf! How did you customise the 35dart drum for stefans? or do you use stefans with that drum? I just modded my stampede and is very interested in getting the 35dart drum that can fit stefans!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Matt,

I don't use stefans in my 35-dart drum magazines, they are still stock.

I've seen modded examples posted online by other modders before... but so far i've not been able to successfully mod an actual 35-dart drum magazine to use stefans reliably yet.
